Passport is Your Golden Ticket

You can’t rely more on other travel documents. Your passport is now your main key to unlocking your dreams of studying, working and living in Finland.

Starting on September 1, 2024, you will need a valid passport from your country of nationality to apply for a residence permit in Finland.

Even if you have applied before September 1 but haven’t received a decision yet, these new rules may affect your application as well.

First-timers, pay extra attention

In most cases, getting your first permits from outside Finland is usually the most common to happen. Hence, there are exceptions in some special cases, like family ties or studies.

If you are already in Finland and planning to get your first residence permit, it might be harder this time. However, you might be lucky and get the chance, if you fall under one of these categories:

  • You are a family member of a Finnish citizen.
  • You are applying for a residence permit for a child born in Finland.
  • You are applying for a residence permit for studies, or you are a family member of a student.
  • You are applying for a residence permit for a researcher, or you are a family member of a researcher.

If you left Finland within the last 5 years and got help from the Finnish government to go back to your home country (or another country) to settle there, you might not get a new residence permit now.

This is because the government wants. to make sure that you are serious in staying in Finland this time.
